The Fourth of July is a time for celebration, fireworks, and family fun—but if you're a French Bulldog owner in Albuquerque, it can also be a time of serious anxiety for your pup.
Frenchies are sensitive, snorty little companions with big personalities—and unfortunately, big reactions to loud noises. Fireworks, in particular, can cause severe stress, shaking, panic, and even seizures in extreme cases.
At Frenchiverse, we want your Frenchie to stay safe and relaxed this holiday. Here’s what you need to know:
French Bulldogs already struggle with brachycephalic airway syndrome, which makes breathing harder when they’re stressed or overheated. Loud, sudden fireworks can:
Trigger panic and hyperventilation
Cause escape behaviors (digging, running, hiding)
Lead to vomiting, diarrhea, or destructive behavior
In extreme cases, result in seizures or injury
Albuquerque neighborhoods like Nob Hill, the South Valley, and even the Foothills often experience backyard fireworks starting as early as July 2nd—meaning your Frenchie could be exposed to several days of noise.
For dogs with severe anxiety, vets often recommend Sileo (dexmedetomidine gel)—a prescription-only sedative that’s applied to your dog’s gums.
It helps calm the nervous system without knocking them out completely.
🔒 Note: This is for severe cases only and should be prescribed by your vet. If your Frenchie has had past panic attacks during fireworks, now’s the time to ask your vet about Sileo.
Set up a cozy crate or enclosed room with:
White noise (fans, music, or a “fireworks sounds” desensitization track)
Their favorite blanket or toy
Dim lighting
This “den-like” environment can reduce overstimulation.
Start playing low-volume fireworks sounds on YouTube a few days before July 4th. Pair the sound with treats and calm praise so they don’t associate the noise with fear.
Places like Balloon Fiesta Park or Old Town can be overwhelming. Even if your Frenchie loves social outings, this is one event they’re better off skipping.
More pets go missing on the Fourth of July than any other day of the year.
Double-check your Frenchie’s collar, ID tag, and microchip registration.
If your dog shows any of these signs during fireworks, consult your vet immediately:
Excessive drooling or panting
Trembling that doesn’t stop
Attempting to escape enclosed areas
Inability to settle or stop pacing
Vomiting or diarrhea
Here at Frenchiverse, we love celebrating the red, white, and blue—but we’re even more passionate about helping Frenchies stay safe and relaxed in the 505.
Whether you're in Ventana Ranch, Rio Rancho, or Downtown ABQ, start preparing now. If you think your pup may need medication support, don’t wait—call your vet today and ask about Sileo.
After the fireworks are done, celebrate your pup for making it through.
A frozen Kong, a cuddle on the couch, or a new toy from your local ABQ pet shop can go a long way.
